I stumbled across this advertisement while watching TV today, it talks about patriotism in Malaysia.
It was a rainy day, where a middle aged Malay motorist stopped by at a bus stand waiting for the rain to subside. At the bus stop alone, a few groups of people (all malays if my memory serves me well) also sat there either waiting for buses, or to gain temporary shelter.
Then some lightning struck on a pole , and down fall the Malaysian flag. Nobody seemed to bother about it's predicament, except that uncle of course, who seemed to have an urge to grab it back. Soon enough, a car seemed to be approaching. The uncle, feeling paranoid and fearing that the car will run over the flag, very quickly, he ran towards the flag and picked it up immediately without hesitation, ignoring the heavy downpour of course.
The message is quite vivid. It says, Our country flag is our pride, never let our pride down.
Here comes the point of the day, will you do the same?
Don't you think the advertisement itself is already instilling racism? Put it in this way, why must everyone in the bus stand be Malays? Are Malays the only people who are patriotic enough to protect their pride, the Malaysian flag? I can't help but to relate pride with social rights, of course they have the benefit of being the aborigines, deserving much more advantage in many ways. So, does that justify the fact that they are the only people who will be protecting our pride?
Ask yourself this, do you think, by any chance will they replace that Malay uncle with a Chinese, to pick up the flag? Haha, guess the answer is so obvious that most of us would have already knew without guessing. Chinese, and indians alike, we - are much lower than that of the Malays, that we - are incapable of protecting our national pride, our country flag. Talking about ranking, if ever you have to compare which race is better in this country, I guess the native Malays tops the first.
So, what is the point of instilling patriotism? When some of these patriotic messages are still indirectly elevating the rights of the Bumiputras? How do one be patriotic, when we are still being treated unequally?
Let's talk about the new motto, or patriotic code whatever it's called - ONE MALAYSIA.
The point of being one, is being unified alike, being the same, hence the word - ONE, because everything will reconciled into being a united representation, denoted by the figure 1. Such powerful number isn't it? Like who doesn't like to be number 1 in everything.
However so, picture this, few pencils are being tied together, some being short and some being long, of course when you tie them together it will be in ONE bundle. But the thing is, the height is unequal, when you put your palm on the sharp led surfaces, the longer pencils will actually poke you, it hurts does it. See, when you have unequal objects together, uniting them might give you a stronger bond in the outside, but when you tries to approach them in the inside, it does actually hurt.
Same like races, if we are treated unequally, of course the government can always unite us as it seems on the outside, but deep within, do you think the aim can be achieved, when backstabbing among races, conflicts and arguments, corruptions are happening like never before? One day, the bond will still break. Why does all these seems to happen? Because some people aren't happy with their current positions, they feel mistreated, they feel unfair. If uniting people in different races is already such a tedious task, wouldn't by having unequal rights among one races with the other adds up the impossibility in this? It's funny how our government can seem so confident by just saying one malaysia, but little did they know that the younger generation aren't that blind anymore.
Don't get me wrong, I still loves my country, I still love the fact that I'm born here, but I am just not so patriotic, because I can't feel it deep within, or should I say, there isn't any reasons that allows me to feel so.
1 Malaysia. 1 Nation.
